TransGender Educational Association of Greater Washington (TGEA)

Type of organization: Social/support group for all transgendered persons. Membership is who is for anyone anywhere on the gender spectrum. Primarily membership currently is heterosexual crossdressers, transsexuals (mtf) in transition and their partners (SO). Support is informal, peer-based. TGEA publishes a newsletter (The TGEA Pinnacle) and also has a library and other information available. TGEA also offers educational seminars and outreach presentations to the public.

Meeting Time & Location: 7:00 p.m., usually every First Saturday (but not Labor Day weekend or 4th of July weekend). Meeting location is kept confidential for the privacy of members and access to group is given upon the completion of a personal interview, at which the interviewee need not be crossdressed. Meeting fee is $10 for members and $20 for non-members. Annual membership dues are between $40 and $55.

The Metro Area Gender Identity Connection (MAGIC)

Type of organization: Social/support group for all transsexual persons, their families and friends. MAGIC has a newsletter with referral information. Support is informal, peer-based. For more information, visit their website

Transgender Health & Empowerment (THE)

Type of organization: Advocacy, support and outreach group for transgendered residents of the District of Columbia. THE offers referrals and outreach presentations, and support is informal, peer-based. Issues and concerns include HIV/AIDS & STDs, substance abuse, homeless and incarcerated transgendered persons, and employment and housing discrimination.

PFLAG/Transfamily

Provides a facilitated discussion and peer support for families (parents, siblings, SOs, children, friends)Êof transgendered folk. Transgendered folk are encouraged to bring family members with them.

Meeting Time & Location: Transfamily meets in the Cedar Lane Unitarian ChurchÊas an adjunct ofÊPFLAG on the third Sunday of each month between 2:00 and 4:00 PM at the Church, (take Cedar Lane east from Rockville Pike for 0.7 miles).
